Ned Leroy Hayes was the first of 4 children and the only son of Josephine and Ernest Jackson. He was born January 9, 1930 in Watonga, Oklahoma. Growing up in Oklahoma, Ned graduated from Dunbar High School in 1947. He attended Langston University in Langston, OK but decided to enlist in the U.S. Army on November 6, 1948.
