Joyce was born in Marion, Ohio on October 30, 1927 to Harry and Pauline Buckingham, as one of five children. She graduated from Harding High School where she was a cheerleader. She worked in retail sales until marrying her love, Charles "Ted" Hacker on May 19, 1946. Joyce set off on a wonderful life of farming and mothering in Cardington, Ohio.
